Science Week
We are exploring the properties of card and paper. We had to discover ways to make paper stand. The next challenge was that our paper had to support a copy. Next we made a card bridge and tested the strength of our bridge by seeing how many copies they could hold. It was great fun and exciting to see which bridge held the most copies.

In this activity, your child will be tasked to create a boat that can successfully float 25 one cent coins. They can be creative with how they make their boat and can use any household items.
I have given instructions which you can use to guide your child through the design thinking process. I have also given step-by-step instructions for making a boat in case your child is stuck and needs some inspiration.
What You Need: Plastic straws, Duct tape, Plastic wrap,Plastic container/Tupperware,Mini paper cup, 25 one cent coins set aside in a plastic bag, Pen and paper for taking note
What You Do:
1 . Before your child gets to work, make sure that they fully understand the prompt of this challenge. Explain to them that they're supposed to use the materials you're providing in order to create a boat that will hold 25 one cent coins and stay afloat.
2. Ask your child some of the following questions so that they start thinking about why certain things float and why others sink:
a. Besides a boat, what are some things you know that float in water?
b. What are some things that sink in water?
c. Why do you think a boat is able to float? (Answer: the concept of buoyancy.)
3. Explain to your child that buoyancy is a force underneath an object that pushes it upward. When an object (like a boat) has more buoyancy, it can float higher on the water because it is being pushed upward with more force.
4. After your child fully understands the prompt of this challenge and has considered the properties of objects that float, they can begin brainstorming different ways to build a boat of their own.
Feel free to show your child all the materials you will provide, but don't let them start building just yet. Instead, have them draw or write down their ideas on a piece of paper so that they can refer back to them later. (You can also write them down if you'd like.)
5. Once your child is done brainstorming, ask them to choose the idea they think will work best. Be sure to ask them why they are choosing this design, emphasizing the purpose of the boat (to float 25 one cent coins).
This is an important step of the design thinking process because it teaches your child to prioritize the functionality of their design over personal preferences. This also prevents your child from getting emotionally attached to one design.
6. Next, allow your child to begin building. Be sure to supervise for safety purposes, but allow them to work independently through challenges as much as possible.
7. After your child is done building, it's time to test the design. Have your child place the 25 one cent coins on their boat, counting them aloud one by one. Then, fill a container with water to serve as a "pool" for the boat to float on. Next, have your child place their boat on the water and observe whether it successfully floats the coins.
a. If your child's boat successfully floats with 25 one cent coins in it, congratulate them for their success!
b. If your child's boat sinks, make sure they aren't discouraged. Ask your child what they think went wrong and why. Then, encourage them to go back and repeat this process in order to make a boat that works next time.
Below, we have written instructions for building a boat in case your child is struggling to come up with ideas. Feel free to have your child build something entirely on their own, or use the procedure below:
1 . First, take a piece of duct tape and stick some plastic straws to the adhesive side of the tape.
Ask your child why plastic straws are a useful item to make a boat out of. (Answer: plastic straws are buoyant, meaning they're able to float in water.)
2. Next, wrap your straws and duct tape in plastic wrap. Ask your child why they think using plastic wrap is useful. (Answer: plastic wrap makes the boat "waterproof.")
3. Tape down the plastic wrap using duct tape to secure it in place. At this point, you have finished building the boat's structure.
Hope you are all doing well. Here are some ideas for you to try out at home with Mammy and Daddy.

swimming
Our class went to swimming lessons for eight weeks in Aura Swimming Pool in Navan. We thank our parent volunteers and Mrs. O'Sullivan for bringing us each week and also the swimming instructor and all in Aura for helping us. We were very excited every Thursday morning heading off on the bus. We will miss it now its over.
Chess
This year we have learned to play chess. it is a wonderful game. Ms Corr and Mrs O'Sullivan helped us and then we went to take part in the Ficheall tournament in Navan. We had a fun day. We have also started teaching 1st and 2nd class how to play it. They are our" Chess Buddies"
Collection for Dundalk Soup Kitchen
On January 6th we celebrated the feast of the Epiphany with a special Eucharistic celebration assembly. It was the turn of our class to lead it. We sang hymns and lead the prayers. Our theme was around the gifts that the Wise Men brought to Jesus. We were aware that we all got plenty this Christmas and some people did not get very much. So our class decided to collect any unwanted perishable gifts and give them to the people in Dundalk Soup Kitchen. We collected many bags and they were delighted to get them. Thank you everyone for being so generous.
Christmas Play
We had great fun in our Drama classes in the lead up to Christmas. We were busy with our Christmas Play. It was set in Bethlehem around the inns belonging to MR INN and MR OUT. We loved the songs. It was great fun. We loved performing it for our school and especially our parents. We hope you enjoyed it too.
Science Activities
We love science. This year we made land vehicles and raced them. We had to design our vehicle first and then make them. We raced them in class and discovered what we might need to change to make them better. It was great fun. We learned lots from each others designs too. We also made colour wheels and had great fun spinning them to make a white colour. We made our own musical instruments when we were working on sound. We made lots of noise with them in many different ways. We also made whirligigs in class and threw them. We discover how to throw it to make it return in a semicircle to place it was thrown from. This took many attempts!!!
Hallowe'en Dress Up Day
|
We had a lovely Dress Up Day for Hallowe'en. We hope you like our costumes.
|
Maths trail
We had great fun during our Maths trail. We completed our trail inside as it was raining. We were surprised at all the Maths there was around our classroom. We enjoyed this activity during our team teaching in Maths.
ART Work
We love art. Here are some of the things we made.
SKIPPING wORKSHOP
We had great fun at the skipping workshop. It is a hard skill to master, but we will keep practising.
History Workshop
We had a great day last Monday. Aidan came to our school. He showed us lots of artifacts from the World Wars. We brought in our own artifacts to show our class.

Maths tips for 3rd and 4th
Multiplication: This is a new concept for 3rd class and it is important that the proper language is used such as groups of, lots of, multiply, repeated addition. At home, you could encourage your child to use multiplication when shopping. For example work out how much 2 oranges will cost if they are 30 cent each. Or when sitting down to dinner work out how many pairs of shoes will be at the table when all are eating etc. Also we will be using multiplication during problem solving and we use the RUDE approach (Read, Underline, Draw, and Estimate). You could ask your child what does RUDE mean and when doing homework get your child to follow this approach. Tables will need to be learnt every week so please say/sing them off with your child at home. 4th class will be focusing on revising short multiplication and multiplying by zero and one. Also, we will be looking at 3X4 is the same as 4X3 so when saying their tables you could ask your child 3X4 is the same as what?
Division: Again this is a new concept for 3rd class and it is important that it is said that division is repeated subtraction and the proper language be used such as equal, divide, share among. Try and get your child to share out different items equally at home. This could include sharing out food or treats equally between family members or at a party, dividing playing cards equally between a number of players and planting seeds where children sow seeds in rows, dividing the seeds equally between the rows. We will be using division in problem solving so again reinforce the use of the RUDE approach. Tables will be looking at division as well as multiplication during the course of the month. 4th class pupils will be focusing on sharing items equally among people and that division sums can have remainders. So if the sum has a remainder that it can be correct.
Good Websites: www.multiplication.com, www.mathsisfun.com, www.mathsdictionaryforkids.com
The children in third and fourth class have been:
Learning to tell the time in analogue and digital.
Expressing analogue time as digital and vice versa.
Learning to read the time in five minute intervals on the analogue clock.
Telling the time in one minute intervals in digital.
Converting hours to minutes and vice versa.
Solving problems involving time.
Some tips:
Ask your child the time regularly and give them plenty of practice at it.
Encourage your child to read timetables and the TV pages to become familiar with reading time and figuring out what time programmes are on the TV and how long they are on for.
Encourage your child to wear a watch and to become responsible for their own timekeeping when possible.
Time Facts to be learned:
There are 60 minutes in an hour.
There are 60 seconds in one minute.
There are 14 days in a fortnight.
There are 7 days in a week.
There are 365 days in a year.
There are 366 days in a leap year.
30 days has September, April, June and November, all the rest have 31 except February alone has 28 and 29 in a leap year.
There are 12 months in a year.
There are 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Fractions and Decimals
Here are some of the facts that need to be learned in this unit of maths.
3rd Class
1/10 is equal to 0.1
2/10 is equal to 0.2
3/10 is equal to 0.3
4/10 is equal to 0.4
5/10 is equal to 0.5
6/10 is equal to 0.6
7/10 is equal to 0.7
8/10 is equal to 0.8
9/10 is equal to 0.9
10/10 is equal to 1.0
Practice counting in decimals 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4….. up to 5
There are ten tenths in one whole.
There are eight eights in one whole
There are four quarters in one whole.
4th Class
Converting decimals to fractions and vice versa
0.01 is equal to 1/100
0.02 is equal to 2/100
0.11 is equal to 11/100
0.22 is equal to 22/100
1.11 is equal to 1 11/100
3.45 is equal to 3 45/10o
3 3/100 is equal to 3.03
4 56/100 is equal to 4.56
It helps to talk about money when doing these types of sums. Ask: would you rather a tenth of a euro or a hundredth of a euro? Why?
Lines and Angles
Parallel lines are lines that never meet.
Perpendicular lines form a right angle.
Vertical lines go up and down.
Horizontal lines go across.
An equilateral triangle has three equal sides and three equal angles.
An isosceles triangle has two equal sides and two equal angles.
A scalene triangle has no equal sides and no equal angles.
A right angle is 90 degrees. Use the corner of your copybook to measure a right angle
Money
Give your child opportunities to handle money.
Money facts to be learned:
There is 100 cent in €1.
€1.00 = 100c
€2.00 = 200c
50c = €0.50
5c = €0.05c
The children will be recording money using the euro symbol and the decimal point.
They will be adding and subtracting money.

They will be adding and subtracting money.
Halloween 2016
Arguably one of the best parts of Halloween for us is when we come to school looking like this .........
December 2016
Christmas 2016 saw us perform a rip-roaring nativity play written in the style of 'Horrid Henry', which certainly got our audiences giggling.
Poor Mr & Mrs Innkeeper have a problem! Their son Ben, is a bit of a handful. Who on earth would want to stay at Bethlehem's inn while Big Bad Ben is causing mischief with his practical jokes?
Fortunately, help is on hand through a strange visitor... Super-Nanny Gabriel will help Ben to be better behaved and might persuade him to clean up the inn, just in case any shepherds or wise men come to visit!

School Tour 2014
On Thursday June 12th, 3rd to 6th Class set off to Fingal Sailing School and to Malahide Castle. Everyone from teachers to pupils had a fantastic day out. Children began at Fingal Sailing School where they tested their water skills trying out kayaking, sailing and surfing. Once all the wetsuits were off, we headed up to Malahide Castle where we learned all about the history of the castle and even heard some ghost stories!! To finish the day we enjoyed the sunshine and had fun at the park at the castle. The bus home was a quiet one with many tired faces. It was definitely a day to remember.

Active Week 2014
Active week got off to a great start where the whole school were very lucky to take part in a whole day blitz hosted by Syddan GFC. All the children displayed their many skills and took part in many games throughout the day.
Following this we were very lucky to meet who showed us how the top bikers do it. We watched many videos of him taking part in races and of the range of safety gear that is needed to take part in this sport. Children were lucky to see his bike and received recycled pencils and reflectors from where he worked. _____ explained how important it is to be active and how nothing should stand in the way of our dreams.
Wednesday kicked off with the parachute. Ms. Judge took all the children out to play and take part in many parachute games. Great fun was had by all. Following this children from 3rd - 6th class were divided into teams and took part in a Hurling Blitz for the afternoon. As part of our PE curriculum children learned skills such as the roll/jab lifts, striking on the ground and from hand, soloing, blocking, hand passing and many more. All of these and more were displayed on the day. All five teams participated with great determination but it was the Yellow and Red teams who reached the finals, in which the Yellow team won.

Easter Stories
The pupils of 3rd and 4th class wrote some wonderful Easter stories using a given story starter. Here are some of them.
An Easter Miracle by Jamie (4th Class)
Crack, crack, crack ….. suddenly one of my Easter egg started to move! I watched in shock as two bright orange feet appeared. After a while my egg raced out of the kitchen. As I ran after it I thought to myself, Mam bought this egg from Lidl. I hate Lidl! As the egg ran it jumped out of the metallic like window. As it ran down the drive suddenly it leaped into the bush. I heard barking so I decided to jump in.
As I landed face first my hand started to turn into a square. As I got up my clothes turned black like a Tuxedo! As I looked up the egg broke! After I got up I could hear hissing. What is that I thought to myself ? Ssssssss! Boom, boom, boom! As blocks flew I shouted creeper. When I saw a glamrous cat with orange fur and blue eyes. So I decided to run. I saw a portal so I ran and teleported to the real world that was crazy lets do it again some time!
My Chocolate Hen by Dónal (4th Class)
Crack, crack, crack ….. suddenly one of my Easter egg started to move! The Easter egg just started to waddle all over the place and with one small pop a chocolate hen appeared. It was mindblowing, it had all the features and design of a real hen, I was in awe. I just didn't believe it, to make sure I wasn't dreaming I got a bucket of freezing water and poured it on myself, five seconds later I was thinking I should've just pinched myself. Suddenly I remembered the hen! It wasn't there, I thought how could I have been so stupid. There was only one place it could be, in my house!
I rushed inside, I didn't know where to look. It could be anywhere inside my house. But just then I noticed something shimmering on the Living room sofa. I raced to get there. When I did all I found was chocolate buttons but I knew what they were, chicken du du! I knew it had to have been in the living room. But then I heard the sound of a chicken chirping. I raced to the sound and found myself in my bedroom. I said “Here chicky chicky” but with no such luck. Suddenly I saw movement underneath my bedcovers!
I grabbed my bedcovers and yanked them off and sure enough there was the chicken. I picked him up carefully not to break him.I brought the chocolate hen back outside.I placed him down gently and took a closer look at the hen.I went to touch the hen but it just walked backwards out of reach.I suddenly thought if this hen does everything a real hen does it must be able to eat! I picked the chocolate hen up and placed the hen in a cage.I went to get some water and oats and chick feed. When I returned to my amazement the cage door was open and chicken was sitting down like he knew he was going to get fed.
I was in utter shock it opened a cage door ,it knew it was going to get fed,I had no idea what it would do next.I placed the water and food down for the hen and watched it gobble it all down. After it had finished I picked the hen up and placed him down in some hay for him to sleep.I left the hen with some food and water.
I knew it was getting very late so I went to bed without getting changed into my pyjamas. When I woke up I felt my back sticky. I realised I hadn't checked my bed for du du before I went to sleep. From then on I cared for my hen till the end of my days.

An Unusual Easter Egg by Josh (4th class)
Crack crack crack…………..Suddenly one of my Easter eggs started to move. Two miniature yellow and blue glowing legs popped out of the bottom of the egg. Before I could think it was on its way out of the room. Then it ran into the door. ‘CRACK’ went the egg. It had two ears and a rather plump belly.
I wondered where on earth my mom got that crazy egg. It turned around and ran through my legs into the kitchen. ‘WWWWACK’ I went face first onto the ground. Suddenly I heard a smash. I got up and ran into the kitchen. It was a mess; there was glass on the ground and water all over the place. Then I thought to myself ‘Where the hell is that fluffy chicken’.
I looked out the window to see it was waddling its way down the lane. I ran outside and couldn’t see a thing because it was so dark. I sprinted as fast as I could after it. Suddenly when I was running I felt a crack under my foot. I looked down and there lay a lump of chocolate. I thought to myself and said ‘Oh well it’s for the best’ and was on my way back to the house.

My
Easter Surprise by Kelly 3rd Class
Crack, crack, crack suddenly one of my Easter eggs started to move. I watched in amazement as the egg cracked open and out popped an unimaginable creature. It starred at me.
This creature had blood red eyes which burned into me. It had two legs and two paws. The creature stepped closer to me. My heart thumped hard in my chest. I stood in horror as it opened its mouth to show pointy teeth that I stared at. Frozen to the spot I watched it dig its teeth into the door.
It must be teething I thought. It took its sharp teeth out of the door. It turned around to me and said “Mama!” and hugged me with its fluffy paws.I stood there feeling scared and confused. I picked up the weird creature and slipped on my shoes which now had holes in them. How did that happen? This creature did not do that. I turned around to find seventy creature with sharp teeth.
I stood there wanting to cry. How could I take care of all of them? One was enough already. I heard them one after one say “Mama!” I took most of the animals to the garden to go off into the field and they did thank God for that. I kept the first one and don’t ask me why. I had grown to like her. I called her Scarlet because of her eyes.

A Weird Easter By Myles Aver( 4th class)
Crack, crack, crack. Suddenly one of my Easter eggs started to move.
I watched in amazement as the miracle of life happened right in front of me.
I was thinking to myself where did mam get this egg from. Suddenly
out popped two legs covered in fur,and it ran out of my bedroom. It
looked like he was running for a try in half an Easter egg. I thought
it's the new Rob Kearney. Suddenly out came a stunning chick
surrounded by blinding light.
It was covered in fur. I will always love him because he was my first.
