Christmas Jumpers

We are looking forward to Christmas and The Late Late Toy Show. We decided to create wonderful Christmas jumpers to link in with the Toy Show and our Christmas Jumper fundraiser for Crumlin Hospital.
The whole school are looking forward to wearing their Christmas jumpers into school and donating to Crumlin Hospital. We cannot wait to see the magic of the school support for the children at Crumlin hospital.

Symmetrical Snowmen
We created these beautiful Winter scenes using our Maths Symmetry Skills. This project was time consuming, taking alot of patience and attention to detail, we got there in the end. They were worth the effort. Well done 5th & 6th Class.
Letter Writing
With Christmas this year being so different to any other year, we thought it would be nice to think of those who won’t be able to see friends and family as they normally would do.
Our SNA Geraldine helped us link in with Moore hall Lodge to send letters to those in the nursing home, wishing them a very Merry Christmas and letting them know we are thinking of them and that they are in our thoughts.

This September we have spent time settling back into school and getting to know each other.
We all agree it has been so nice to get back to school to see all our friends. We have been talking about our wellbeing and the importance of exercise and managing our feelings.
Have a look at our Emoji Feeling Art displays and our self portraits. We had great fun completing this work.

school closure - March 23rd
Good morning boys and girls,
I hope you and your families are keeping well during this difficult time. I have attached the answers for some of your work from last week below. Keep working away and trying your best to complete all the work set out for this week too. If there is anything you don't understand make a note of it and we can work on it on returning to school. I hope you are all able to stay active during the school closure. Some activities you might like to do during this week may include taking a walk with your family.
You may like to join The Body Coach - Joe Wicks who has a live 30 minute PE session every weekday morning at 9am.
https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
You might also like to work on your maths by using websites such as Topmarks which has many fun maths games.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/
Twinkl also has lots of fun activities available on all subjects for free at the moment if you create an account using the code: IRLTWINKLHELPS
https://www.twinkl.ie/offer
Do your best with your work and remember to be kind and helpful to your family. Have a good week!

Hi there 5th & 6th
Hope you are all doing well. Here are some ideas for you to try out at home .Best Wishes from,
Miss Malone
Don’t forget the FRIENDS acronym:
Try some meditation – here’s one for you!
Breathing Hands
· Spread one hand out like a star.
· Use the index finger on your other hand to trace the outline of your star hand.
· Take a deep breath in as you move to the top of your thumb.
· Breathe out as you move down between your thumb and first finger.
· Take another breath in as you move to the top of your first finger.
· Breathe out as you move down between your first and second finger.
· Repeat until you have taken five slow, deep breaths.
Remember to engage with positive thoughts, emotions, and the self-regulation strategies you have learned.
Have fun with this - Design Challenge: Making a Boat
In this activity, your child will be tasked to create a boat that can successfully float 25 one cent coins. They can be creative with how they make their boat and can use any household items.
I have given instructions which you can use to guide your child through the design thinking process. I have also given step-by-step instructions for making a boat in case your child is stuck and needs some inspiration.
What You Need: Plastic straws, Duct tape, Plastic wrap,Plastic container/Tupperware,Mini paper cup, 25 one cent coins set aside in a plastic bag, Pen and paper for taking note
What You Do:
1 . Before your child gets to work, make sure that they fully understand the prompt of this challenge. Explain to them that they're supposed to use the materials you're providing in order to create a boat that will hold 25 one cent coins and stay afloat.
2. Ask your child some of the following questions so that they start thinking about why certain things float and why others sink:
a. Besides a boat, what are some things you know that float in water?
b. What are some things that sink in water?
c. Why do you think a boat is able to float? (Answer: the concept of buoyancy.)
3. Explain to your child that buoyancy is a force underneath an object that pushes it upward. When an object (like a boat) has more buoyancy, it can float higher on the water because it is being pushed upward with more force.
4. After your child fully understands the prompt of this challenge and has considered the properties of objects that float, they can begin brainstorming different ways to build a boat of their own.
Feel free to show your child all the materials you will provide, but don't let them start building just yet. Instead, have them draw or write down their ideas on a piece of paper so that they can refer back to them later. (You can also write them down if you'd like.)
5. Once your child is done brainstorming, ask them to choose the idea they think will work best. Be sure to ask them why they are choosing this design, emphasizing the purpose of the boat (to float 25 one cent coins).
This is an important step of the design thinking process because it teaches your child to prioritize the functionality of their design over personal preferences. This also prevents your child from getting emotionally attached to one design.
6. Next, allow your child to begin building. Be sure to supervise for safety purposes, but allow them to work independently through challenges as much as possible.
7. After your child is done building, it's time to test the design. Have your child place the 25 one cent coins on their boat, counting them aloud one by one. Then, fill a container with water to serve as a "pool" for the boat to float on. Next, have your child place their boat on the water and observe whether it successfully floats the coins.
a. If your child's boat successfully floats with 25 one cent coins in it, congratulate them for their success!
b. If your child's boat sinks, make sure they aren't discouraged. Ask your child what they think went wrong and why. Then, encourage them to go back and repeat this process in order to make a boat that works next time.
Below, we have written instructions for building a boat in case your child is struggling to come up with ideas. Feel free to have your child build something entirely on their own, or use the procedure below:
1 . First, take a piece of duct tape and stick some plastic straws to the adhesive side of the tape.
Ask your child why plastic straws are a useful item to make a boat out of. (Answer: plastic straws are buoyant, meaning they're able to float in water.)
2. Next, wrap your straws and duct tape in plastic wrap. Ask your child why they think using plastic wrap is useful. (Answer: plastic wrap makes the boat "waterproof.")
3. Tape down the plastic wrap using duct tape to secure it in place. At this point, you have finished building the boat's structure.

Welcome to Fifth and Sixth class
2018-2019
JEP
This year our class is taking part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. We are learning all about what an entrepreneur does to make a business. We are looking at our own gifts and talents and using them in this project. We are learning to work together as a team. Each team in our class developed a business idea and we presented them to our group of dragons. The dragons asked us about how we would produce the item, what profit we would make and who would be our target market. One item was chosen for the class to work on and this now has become our class project. It is a memory box. We conducted some research through questionnaires. Here are some of our team sorting the questionnaires.

Christmas Fare
On Friday, 21st December, our class held the annual Christmas Fare. There was great excitement in our room that day. We were busy setting up our stalls, marking our prices, collecting toys, games, jigsaws, books etc from all the boys and girls, selling raffle tickets, playing games and of course selling everything we could sell. We thank all the boys and girls for their contributions and this year we raised over €400. Each year we donate our money to a different charity and this year our money is going to SOSAD. Well Done Everyone!!

We love Halloween! This year we integrated Visial Arts with Geography and History, to learn all about the interesting Mexican festival of 'Dia deLos Muetos' (Day of the Dead), which is celebrated November 1st-2nd. It is held to honour the memory of loved ones who have passed away. People celebrate by decorating special altars in their homes with marigokds, photographs, and intricate paper garlands. Children decorate and eat sugar skulls, and graves are decorated with marigolds. Check out the sugar skulls we designed ourselves!
We also created beautiful spider web images, using a wax-resist technique known as Batik. They turned out really well.
Finall, have a look at our spooky Halloween silhouettes.

A Visit From Dublin Falconry
Neil, from Dublin Falconry, came to our school on Wednesday, 9th April. He showed us three birds of prey - the Peregrine Falcon, the Long Eared Owl and the Barn Owl. The Barn owl sleeps during the day (often in barns or old farmhouses) and hunts at night and is therefore a nocturnal creature. The Long Eared Owl hunts in the morning and is named a Long Eared Owl because it has long ears. The Peregrine Faclon is the fastest bird in the world. All three are native to Ireland. We loved the visit and got to pet the owls. We even saw their dinner - a chick!!!

Meath Anti-litter
poster competition
There was great excitement in our class when our teacher announced that our school had won one of the prizes in this years Meath Anti-Litter Calendar Competition. The excitement grew even more when we heard it was a winner from our class. A few months earlier we had a discussion on littering and what we can do to make our county a cleaner place. From this we all drew a poster to encourage people to keep our country clean. There were some lovely entries and from all of our entries three were sent to represent the school. Out of three hundred entries we had a calendar winner. We were very happy to hear Ciara's name called out. Her picture is displayed on the month of May in the calendar and shows Mr. Tayto encouraging us to keep the Royal County clean. Well Done Ciara. We are very happy and proud. Ciara went to a special presentation to get her prize and also her picture is on display in the Meath Anti-Litter Calendar. Every family in our school got a calendar from Meath County Council.

Christmas Play - Treasure Island
This year our 5th and 6th class took part in our annual Christmas play. The play was Treasure Island and it was based on the book by Robert Louis Stephenson. This is the story of a young adventurous boy called Jim Hawkins whose adventure took him to an imaginary land filled with buccaneers (pirates) and blaggards (villains).
We designed and made our own set. We made the ship out of cardboard and used barrels and ladders as props. We even made and hung a jolly roger flag from the ceiling. Everyone prepared their own pirate costumes.
After weeks of practise the big day finally arrived. Parents started to streaming in, cameras in hands. The room fell silent as the play began. It lasted forty five minutes and it was a huge success. When the play was over, proud parents clapped and cheered for their talented children. All of us in 5th and 6th class had a blast! What a day!

Spelling BEE
The Spelling Bee is a Spelling competition run by Easons. This year our class are taking part in this competition and to select who would represent our school we held our own in class Spelling Bee competition. We were all asked to spell different words from a set of words our teacher received from the competition. If we spelt the word correctly, we remained in the competition, but if we got the word wrong, we were eliminated. It was great fun. In the end only two people remained and one of these would represent the school. The school representative is Ciara M. and we wish her well in the competition in the Competition in Ashbourne on March 5th. Good Luck Ciara.

Christmas Fair
Before Christmas 2013 there was a tragic event in the Philippines. The result was that many people were lost their homes, all their possessions and many lost family members also. 5th and 6th Class were very moved by what we saw on the news and television and we decided to do something to help the people of the Philippines. We held a Christmas Fair to raise money. We sold books, toys and we even made lovely buns. We also invented games and the pupils paid to take part in them. This event was a great success and we raised €429 . This money was sent to Trócaire and they sent us back a lovely letter and acknowledgement of the money we raised.

Cumann na mbunscol Final
Cumann na mBunscol is part of the GAA for schools. Each year our boys and girls from 5th and 6th take part in Gaelic football matches organised with other schools. This year the girls made their way to the final in Páirc Tailteann. There was great excitement around the school as every class decorated the school and bunting was put up to honour the special event. Miss McKenna was busy training us and we also got some extra training with our local Meath star Briana Roe.
The day of the final arrived and Doireann led our team in the exciting final. Our girls played with great skill and determination against Moynalty. It was an exciting match and with just one minute to go the teams were even. It all depended on the last kick of the ball and Moynalty secured a point. The whistle blew and we lost by just one point.
Although we lost the final, the team lifted their spirits and congratulated the Moynalty ladies. We received a medal and returned for a lovely celebration in Syddan GAA rooms. We thank the Board of Management, the Parents Association, Syddan GAA and Miss McKenna for making this a day we will remember.

Wind Instruments
Our class made wind instruments this year from objects we found around the house. Some people made harmonicas from broken pegs, windpipes from straws and tin whistles from empty bottles. One person even made a tin whistle from a carrot!! Vibrations helped to make the objects create different sounds. We had lots of fun making these and maybe someday in the future one of our class will invent a musical instrument.!!

Our own "Starry Night"
Vincent Van Gogh was a famous painter. He only lived for thirty one years and sold only one of his paintings in his life time. This painting was called the Red Vineyard. One of his most famous paintings is Starry Night. This year we learned about Vincent, his life and his works. We painted our own version of Vincent Van Gogh's painting Starry Night. Each persons effort was different and unique, but we made a good effort to capture the night sky and recreate it. Our beautiful recreations of Starry Night are on display in our classroom.
