We are happy to let you all know that Confirmation for our 6th Class will take place on Wednesday, 15th April 2015 at 11am in St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church, Drumconrath. We wish 6th Class well with all of the preparation which lies ahead of them in this important year.
On Monday September 8th we were delighted to receive a visit from the triumphant Dee Rangers ladies football team. They have been crowned Meath Ladies Junior Football Champions, following their amazing win in last Saturday's final in Ashbourne, from which they emerged deserving victors with a 28 point win over Dunsany. Newtown National School is proud to have many past pupils on the team, and we congratulate them wholeheartedly, along with all of their teammates who put their heart and soul into their football. Many of our present pupils also play for Dee Rangers juvenile teams, and this team sets a fantastic example to their younger club members. The team were even generous enough to bring gifts of sweets to our pupils and the extremely well received gift of No Homework! :) Fantastic achievement ladies, thank you all for taking the time to visit us. Comhgairdeas ó chroí libh go léir!
On Thursday, June 26th, we held a very special presentation ceremony to honour Fr. Michael Sheerin on his Golden Jubilee. This was a very moving and beautiful ceremony, which featured an excellent dramatisation by 5th and 6th class, singing from the choir, a piece from the tin whistle group, speeches from our principal and our Board of Management Chairperson. It was also attended by representatives from our Board and Parent Association. We finished by presenting Fr. Sheerin with a beautiful framed edition of a poem by his favourite poet, local footballing legend and Newtown N.S. past-pupil, Paddy Meegan. The warm welcome our pupils always extend to Fr. Sheerin when he visits is a credit to him. We take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to Fr. Sheerin on reaching this milestone and to thank him for all he does for our school.
On Friday June 20th 2014 we held our annual Sports Fun Day, and what a fitting end to Active Schools Week it was! This event is keenly anticipated by the children and this year didn't disappoint. The children enjoyed a wide range of activities, from dancing, obstacle course, rounders, football, penalty shoot-out, basketball, relay races, egg and spoon race, sack race, three-legged race, and lots more! A massive thank you must go to our Parent Association for organising the day, and to the great number of Parent Volunteers who gave up their time to help out on the day. It was a fantastic day and without you guys it would not have been possible! Afterwards we had a medal presentation ceremony and we raised our very first Active Schools Flag to great cheers from the children. Well done everyone for all their hard work in this worthwhile programme. Below are just a few pictures of the day. On Monday 2nd June, 15 of our parents and teachers travelled to Dublin to take part in the Flora Women's Mini Marathon 2014! This is the largest event of its kind in Europe, and we had a fantastic day! It is an awe-inspiring event, and we hope to take part again next year. Below are just a few pictures of the day! A huge thanks to our Newtown N.S. representatives for giving up their Bank Holiday Monday in aid of our school, and to all who donated sponsorship.
On Wednesday the 9th April we had a visit from Dublin Falconry. Neil the Falconer showed us three wonderful birds, Noddy the barn owl, Bella the long eared owl and Flash the peregrine falcon. This was a wonderful experience for the whole school and everybody enjoyed it.
